Northeastern University Breaks Ground on New Housing Community

Northeastern University recently announced the groundbreaking of a new student housing community on its campus in Boston, Mass., according to a news release. The university is partnering with American Campus Communities (ACC) for development of the project, which will have the capacity for 1,200 students and has a scheduled completion date of fall 2028.

The development will stand 23 stories and also include shared learning spaces, wellness amenities, and 11,000 square feet of public community space including 4,000 square feet of retail space on the ground floor.

“The scale and complexity of this project reflect the strength of our partnership with Northeastern and our ability to work collaboratively with the City of Boston to achieve stakeholder objectives,” said James E. Wilhelm III, ACC chief development officer. “On-campus housing is where many university students experience personal growth, develop community and achieve academic success. This project is designed to deliver a holistic experience for them while meeting the planning and sustainability objectives of a leading national university in Northeastern.”

According to the news release, the facility will be built according to LEED Gold certification standards and use Passive House design principles. It will be all-electric and include energy-efficient building systems to balance indoor comfort with long-term energy efficiency.

“Northeastern has built a new model of partnership between the university, the city, and private developers to create wins all around,” said Kathy Spiegelman, University Vice President and Chief of Planning, Real Estate & Facilities. “We are providing housing for our students, jobs for the community, and revenue for Boston. This groundbreaking is the culmination of many years of planning and kicks off an exciting new phase for the Northeastern community and our surrounding neighborhoods.”
