Disinfecting High-Contact Surfaces in Classrooms to Decrease Student Health Risk
While school hygiene programs such as handwashing promotion are admirable and well intentioned, they typically neglect the rapid recontamination of hands via high-contact touch points that traditionally remain uncleaned, and thus pose risk for infectious agent transmission. To address this issue, a study was designed and conducted to assess a practical and economical routine cleaning/disinfection protocol for custodial personnel in elementary schools, in order to promote environmental hygiene, reduce student health risk, and potentially decrease health-related absences.
The study showed that with administrative and teacher and staff support, routine custodial tasks can be modified to accommodate twice-weekly decontamination of high-touch contact surfaces recognized as key fomites for infectious agent transmission. This is especially relevant as schools consider preventive environmental measures to be taken to reduce health risk to students, teachers, and staff during the current COVID-19 pandemic.
What you will learn:
- A practical custodial protocol used for cleaning and disinfection of a variety of target surfaces and materials throughout a school building
- The scientific basis for twice-weekly decontamination of high-contact surfaces
- The challenge of custodian task modification training and reinforcement
- How schools may evaluate enhanced hygiene performance
- The team approach (administrators, teachers, staff, custodians) to a healthy school environment
