Library Interiors: Creating a Central Hub at School

Libraries today may be places of less printed material, but that hasn’t diminished the important role they serve to their communities. Libraries now are at the heart of a school so students across all grade levels have more opportunities to experience media resources. These educational spaces incorporate technology, accommodate flexible and collaborative learning spaces for small and large groups, and include areas for individual study. This webcast will explore the Shanghai American School’s reimagining of their central library building. The case study offers insight into combining multiple programmatic elements under the same roof including a library, art department, college counseling, and cafe; aligning with workplace design trends to provide a space full of choice and variety to support different learning and working styles; and the implementation of more daylight and connection to the outside environment.

About Our Speaker:

Andrew Hausmann, Associate Principal at Perkins&Will
Andrew HausmannAndrew lives by the mantra: be curious, be fair, be patient. This curiosity took him on a path from his native New Jersey to New York where, after studying theatre in college, he tried his hand at set design. Realizing it was not his true calling, he decided to go back to school for architecture and focus on the human-centric design that transforms our everyday. He believes that the best design is achieved when you can put aside preconceptions and really listen to your client’s vision, continuously collaborate and communicate, and step in as guidance is needed. Andrew is passionate about successful design, focusing on details that improve the processes and address the pain points for his clients. “Design should be purpose-forward and provide improved function, in addition to alluring aesthetics, to truly serve the goals of the client.”
