Protecting Students' Social and Emotional Well-Being During a Pandemic Through Design

School officials across the United States are grappling with how — and whether — to reopen amid the COVID-19 pandemic. While the health of students is the number one priority, the concern around the psychological wellbeing of students is frequently missed from the conversation. Educational Interior Designers at global design firm HKS understand that students cope with their emotions and show empathy through spatial experiences and interactions precipitated by their physical environments.

During this webinar, Adelia Schleusz, HKS Director of Education Interiors, will discuss strategies for how we can foster a sense of place in our learning environments and sense of belonging in our school communities. We will explore strategies and utilize design methodologies to encourage belonging to foster community through the lens of social and emotional well-being. Beyond the necessary physical distancing and infection prevention protocols, we owe it to students to devote the same attention to their psychological safety and social and emotional health.
