Thinking Outside of the (Big) Box: Adaptive Reuse for Educational Facilities
Community demand for early education, as well as research supporting the lifelong impact, has some school districts grappling with the best approach to deliver successful, sought-after programs for their youngest learners. Early education is as unique as the learners themselves, and multiple variables must be considered to best align with the district’s educational vision for its community.
At the North Kansas City Schools Early Education Center, adaptive reuse of a vacant big box retail store expedited construction to address sudden growth and program demand. This option was a cost-effective way to achieve future-ready learning environments and to reinvigorate a stagnant area within a community. It brings an element of playfulness and joy to the site.
What you will learn:
- Understand how, by thinking outside the box, nontraditional facilities can facilitate early learning and become true community assets
- Explore multiple funding sources and creative approaches to secure funding available at the local, state, or national levels
- Understand the importance of design in creating scale-appropriate facilities with wayfinding, outdoor play, and interior environments that bring joy to the learning experience
- Understand how cost-conscious decisions can positively impact capacity at existing schools, life-cycle costs, and sustainability
