MiraCosta College and California's Secretary of State Team Up to Increase Voter Registration and Civic Participation

OCEANSIDE, CA – MiraCosta College partnered with California's Secretary of State and made a commitment to increase voter engagement, democratic participation, and civic literacy among the student body.

Signed by both Dr. Sunita Cook, superintendent/president of MiraCosta College District and Lindsey Tam, president of the Associated Student Government at MiraCosta College, a memorandum of understanding confirms the district's undertaking through the implementation of best practices to increase civic engagement. MiraCosta College is committed to the promotion of civic engagement through the implementation of tactics like asking students during optimal time periods or via their student portals to register to vote, sending all-campus emails and notifications about the importance of voting before voter registration deadlines and elections, and implementing said practices for on-the-ground voter registration efforts.

"Active participation is necessary to uphold a healthy democracy and it's critical that students are educated on the opportunities to get involved in the process and the impact of their choices. Today's college students are part of the largest generation in history and we play a major role in the success of our futures. MiraCosta College is excited to be a part of the process through the rollout of the 'Have a Voice, Make a Choice campaign," explains Lindsey Tam, president of MiraCosta College Associated Student Government.

Kicking off the awareness campaign, the Associated Student Government is hosting two nonpartisan events, College Hour, where all candidates (or their campaign representatives) running for political office in 2018, are invited to share information to educate student voters.

"As an institution of higher education, it is essential that we provide our students with the tools needed to take action and participate in the democratic process. Voting is the cornerstone of our democracy and we want to increase the number of MiraCosta College students who are civically engaged, empowering them to utilize their voices in the electoral process," says Dilcie Perez, dean of student life and judicial affairs at MiraCosta College District.
