California High School Starts Construction on STEAM, Music Buildings

Tamalpais High School, part of the Tamalpais Union High School District, recently broke ground on two new major facilities for its campus in Mill Valley, Calif., according to a news release. The district is partnering with Quattrocchi Kwok Architects (QKA) and Lathrop Construction Associates for the Science Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics (STEAM) and Music Buildings, both replacing their outdated counterparts.

The new STEAM Building will stand four stories and measure 24,000 square feet, according to the news release. It will feature general classrooms, two science classrooms with lab preparation space, and a photography classroom with a separate support space, storage rooms, and staff collaboration and conference areas.

Amenities of the 9,000-square-foot Music Building are set to include ensemble rooms for choir and band students, a recording studio, practice rooms, music library, storage space, and lobby areas, the news release reports.

“This is an incredibly exciting time as we welcome students and staff back to school for a new year, and simultaneously get started on these Measure B projects,” said TUHSD Superintendent Dr. Courtney Goode. “This investment in our community will allow us to support the highest quality education for our students, with facilities and technology that will help them gain the skills to lead in a competitive world.”

Sustainability features of the two projects include a solar photovoltaic system on the STEAM Building, drought-resistant and native landscape features, smart plumbing fixtures, and LED fixtures and occupancy sensors in both buildings.
