Internet2 Welcomes Google Cloud to Its Community

WASHINGTON, DC – Internet2 has announced that Google has joined its community, a not-for-profit, member-driven advanced technology and networking consortium dedicated to enabling innovation and scientific discoveries for the next generation of research and education. Google plans to work with Internet2 and its member institutions to explore higher education technology opportunities with Google Cloud Platform, which enables developers to build, test, and deploy applications on Google’s highly-scalable and reliable infrastructure.

Internet2 is comprised of over 300 higher education institutions working together alongside leading corporations, government agencies and research facilities. On behalf of its member institutions, Internet2 operates the nation’s largest and fastest, coast-to-coast research and education (R&E) network and also operates trust, identity and cloud service programs.

Google Cloud Platform offers businesses and universities the same powerful infrastructure, data analytics and machine learning that Google uses to drive innovation and performance. Google Cloud Platform frees organizations from the overhead of managing infrastructure, provisioning servers and configuring networks.

“The Internet2 community has a rich history of pioneering new technologies and innovations and we see Google Cloud Platform’s involvement as an ideal way to further engage the community in deep conversations about next generation services and technologies,” says Shel Waggener, senior vice president, Internet2. “We look forward to working with Google Cloud Platform on many potential projects to benefit our higher education members.”

The Google Cloud Platform suite of services can power university infrastructure, research and teaching and now serves over one billion end-users through its customers’ products and services.

It is anticipated that Internet2 and Google will work with Internet2 member universities across the United States to explore how GCP can better serve higher education. Through community input, we hope to identify projects that can help meet the needs of the higher education’s community in the areas of data analytics and machine learning technologies, using Google’s cloud tools.

Member institutions interested in these early collaborations can sign up to receive more information at internet2.edu/gcp.
