Ohio State University Opens 26-Story Hospital

The Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center recently opened in Columbus, Ohio, standing 26 stories and covering 1.9 million square feet, according to a university news release. The project marks ten years of effort and is the university’s largest single-facility construction project ever. Amenities include 24 operating rooms, 820 private rooms, and a 24/7 dining facility.

The facility already plays home to at least 425 patients, who were transferred in upon the facility’s opening. Its staff will include about 12,000 providers and support staff providing care in specialties like surgery, neurosurgery, neurology, adult organ transplants, critical care, and more.

“Thousands of people have been working diligently for years to turn our vision for a transformational hospital that improves lives across Ohio, the nation and the world into a reality,” said Walter “Ted” Carter Jr., university president. “Today is about so much more than opening a building. It’s about honoring our land-grant mission by delivering life-changing patient care, advancing innovative research and providing high-quality education for generations to come.”

According to the news release, specific amenities include 24 operating rooms, two of which are hybrid neurovascular suites; 234 ICU beds; 10 interventional radiology suites; Level 4 maternity care with an express elevator for patients in labor; 24/7 access to both indoor and outdoor reflection spaces; 24/7 dining access; and almost 150 beds for patients of the Arthur G. James Cancer Hospital and Richard J. Solove Research Institute.
