The American University in Cairo Selects Design Firm for Campus Expansion Project

The American University in Cairo (AUC) recently announced a Campus Expansion Project that will take place across 65 acres in Cairo, Egypt, according to a news release. The English-language, American-accredited institution will launch five new projects to serve its community of about 7,000 undergraduate, graduate, and doctorate students. The university selected design firm DLR Group to move the vision forward.

Among the five scheduled projects, DLR Group will provide programming, architecture, and interior design services for a new student housing facility and the Hub for Extended Learning and Education. Design for the student residence will focus on student wellness and fostering a sense of community, featuring cafes, co-working spaces, music rooms, prayer rooms, and more. The Hub of Extended Education will incorporate biophilic design elements while also maintaining the look and feel of the existing campus, the news release reports.

“Embarking on this expansion project for AUC is an incredible opportunity to shape environments that will enrich the minds of students for years to come,” said Benjamin Strain, DLR Group Principal and Higher Education Design Leader. “It’s an honor that AUC has entrusted DLR Group in these projects that will expand an already successful institution into something even greater.”

Construction is scheduled to begin in 2025.
