ASCD's Professional Development Resources Enhance Leadership Skills for New Administrators

Alexandria, VA ASCD, a global community dedicated to excellence in learning, teaching, and leading, is pleased to offer professional development resources for new administrators in education.

ASCD Book Bundles for Principals
ASCD has compiled several book bundles specifically for principals’ professional development. Each bundle is packed with advice, strategies, and solutions for principals seeking to improve their practices and meet the standards set forth by the Interstate School Leaders Licensure Consortium.

  1. ASCD New Principal BundleThis four-book bundle addresses the complex challenges of the principalship and describes ways principals can support academic success in their schools.

ASCD Principal Resource Collection—This collection of 12 go-to titles covers essential tasks for principals, such as managing staff members, handling administrative programs, and planning and implementing school policies. This collection includes instant classics like Read, Write, Lead: Breakthrough Strategies for Schoolwide Literacy Success by esteemed educator Regie Routman, and various other books packed with practical tips, such as 100+ Ways to Recognize and Reward Your School Staff  by Emily E. Houck.
  3. ASCD Principal Resource Library—This expanded library of 18 titles (including one DVD) offers a variety of tools and strategies to help principals become better instructional leaders and work more productively with colleagues to promote the success of all learners in their schools. This library includes works from best-selling ASCD authors such as Heidi Hayes Jacobs, Carol Ann Tomlinson, Diane Ravitch, Robert J. Marzano, Douglas Fisher, and Nancy Frey.

Plan Your Professional Development with ASCD’s Institutes
This fall, ASCD will host a variety of professional development institutes that will enable administrators to learn more about some of the most pressing topics in education. These one-, two-, or three-day meetings are offered throughout the year at a variety of convenient locations. Here are just a few upcoming institutes:

  1. Disrupting PovertyBuilding on their ASCD book Turning High-Poverty Schools into High-Performing Schools, William Parrett and Kathleen Budge will present in-depth research on the schools they’ve studied and show critical components that set high-performing/high-poverty schools apart from their struggling peers. Principals, teacher leaders, and district leaders will benefit from Parrett and Budge’s real-world examples and practical advice.
  2. Building Teachers' Capacity for SuccessIn this institute based on the ASCD book Building Teachers' Capacity for Success, ASCD faculty member and principal Pete Hall will show district administrators and instructional coaches a differentiated approach to coaching and supervision that is centered on identifying and nurturing teachers' individual strengths and helping them reach new levels of professional success and satisfaction.
  3. Giving Teachers Feedback That Makes a Difference in Their Practice—In one of the pre-conference institutes before the ASCD 2014 Conference on Educational Leadership, education consultant Robyn R. Jackson will teach administrators how to give effective feedback and construct it in a way that will motivate teachers to improve their practice.

Held on the first Tuesday of every month using #ASCDL2L, the chat allows participants to submit questions, share insights, and offer resources that help all educators support the success of each learner.
  2. Pinterest—ASCD has added a new pin board to the ASCD Pinterest page that is specifically for principals, districts leaders, and administrators. The Principal Leadership board features practical articles, publications, and other professional development resources focused on enhancing leadership skills.

  • UT-San Antonio Begins Residence Hall Renovations

    The University of Texas at San Antonio recently began a $6-million renovation project to one of its residence halls, according to a news release. Originally completed in 1986, Chisolm Hall measures in at 120,860 square feet and is the oldest and largest residence hall on campus.

  • California High School Opens New Classroom Building for 7th-, 8th-Graders

    Santa Rosa City Schools in Santa Rosa, Calif., recently announced the completion of a new classroom building for Piner High School. As the campus transitions to a Junior/Senior High School, the facility will play home to the school’s new population of seventh- and eighth-grade students.
