Temple University to Establish Second Regional Medical School Campus

Temple University’s Lewis Katz School of Medicine recently announced that it has signed a Memorandum of Understanding with WellSpan Health to establish a second regional campus in Central Pennsylvania, according to a news release. The school currently enrolls about 880 medical students across its main Health Sciences Center campus in North Philadelphia and the St. Luke’s University Health Network campus in Bethlehem, Pa.

“The high-quality care WellSpan is known for across the Mid-Atlantic will only be enhanced by welcoming these medical students who will soon train and hone their skills among our own expert physicians and team members,” said Dr. Anthony Aquilina, WellSpan Health’s executive vice president and chief physician executive. “Temple University has a strong national reputation for its educational programs, and we’re excited to work with such a prestigious institution knowing how it will benefit our patients.”

The first class of about 40 medical students would start in August 2027 and graduate in May 2031, according to the news release. The campus’ proposed location currently serves as a WellSpan administrative building. WellSpan York Hospital will play home to the school’s initial clinical site, incorporating all of WellSpan Health’s hospitals and ambulatory sites into the education experience. The news release also reports that the campus will employ about 100 Katz faculty and have an additional staff of 30.
