Fayetteville State University Opens New College of Education Building

Fayetteville State University (FSU) in Fayetteville, N.C., recently celebrated the opening of a new $69.3-million College of Education building, according to a university news release. The four-story, 72,000-square-foot facility consolidates education programs previously located across campus and expands the university’s capacity for teacher and educational leadership preparation.

The project was funded through capital appropriations from the North Carolina General Assembly. The new facility features classrooms, laboratories, faculty offices, conference rooms, collaborative spaces, outdoor learning areas, and a dedicated STEM lab. Classrooms also include technology designed to support both in-person and hybrid instruction.

“This facility gives our faculty new opportunities to innovate in teaching, scholarship, and educator preparation,” said Scott Krawczyk, FSU provost and vice chancellor for academic affairs. “It gives our students a modern environment in which to learn their profession.”

The building also provides space for programs including reading clinics, special education, and the state-funded North Carolina Teaching Fellows Program. Bringing these resources together supports FSU’s longstanding role in educator preparation; the university was founded in 1867 and traces its origins to the education of Black children before becoming the State Colored Normal School a decade later.

Design elements throughout the building reference FSU’s seven founders, with abstract representations of the number seven incorporated into exterior and interior features including the canopy, brick, glass, woodwork, stairs, and lighting. The project was among the final designs associated with the late Curt Moody, founder of architecture firm Moody Nolan. Metcon Construction led construction.

The project also supports FSU’s 2023–33 Campus Master Plan. Consolidating College of Education programs into a single facility will allow the university to renovate or repurpose other campus spaces as enrollment and facility needs change.
