Georgia State University Opens New Research Tower

Georgia State University in Atlanta, Ga., recently held a ribbon-cutting ceremony for a new, nine-story, 155,000-square-foot Research Tower, according to university news. Amenities include academic classrooms, a large lecture space, teaching labs, faculty research space, and the uppermost floors reserved for future expansion.

“We’re very excited about this project and others at Georgia State because it helps contribute to a great workforce, which makes it easy for me to be able to sell this state to a lot of folks who want to hire new college graduates, and that is my main mission in life,” said Gov. Brian Kemp. “It’s not just a new asset for GSU. It’s an asset for our entire state.”

According to the project’s website, the R1 research university increased its research expenditures from about $91 million in 2012 to $215 million in 2022. The facility had an estimated cost of about $100 million and represents a continued investment in the university’s capabilities.

“The Research Tower expands both our facilities and our potential for impact,” said Donald Hamelberg, interim vice president for Research and Economic Development, at the groundbreaking ceremony last year. “The collaborative environment allows us to drive knowledge that helps foster growth, create jobs and expand Georgia’s competitive edge in research and innovation.”

The university partnered with design firm HOK and construction firm Brasfield & Gorrie, according to the university website.

“This building represents another important chapter in the university’s growth as an urban research institution and, importantly, it creates new opportunities for the students who are at the heart of everything we do,” said GSU President M. Brian Blake.
