Carnegie Mellon University Receives $3B Gift to Launch New Campus

Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh, Penn., recently announced that it has received $3 billion—the largest individual gift in higher education history—from Citadel CEO and founder Ken Griffin, according to a news release. From the funds, $1 billion will go toward supporting the university’s Pittsburgh campus, and the other $2 billion will go toward building and launching a new campus: CMU Miami in Miami, Fla.

The Pittsburgh investment will be divided equally between the university’s highest-priority initiatives and its School of Computer Science. The latter will receive $500 million and be renamed the Kenneth C. Griffin School of Computer Science. Griffin will also join CMU’s Board of Trustees.

CMU Miami will occupy more than 35 acres in Miami’s Wynwood neighborhood. Construction is scheduled to begin in 2027, with the first graduate students expected to enroll in 2028, pending regulatory approvals. Once fully built out, the campus is expected to accommodate more than 3,500 undergraduate, master’s, and doctoral students, along with nearly 300 faculty members and more than 600 staff. The university currently anticipates welcoming its first undergraduate class in 2032.

The new campus will take an interdisciplinary approach to academics and research, organizing programs around societal challenges instead of traditional academic majors. Initial focus areas will include human health and biological discovery, national security and strategic capabilities, energy and climate resilience, and advanced manufacturing and industrial transformation.

Plans also call for industry research laboratories and venture studios intended to encourage collaboration among students, faculty, businesses, government agencies, and community partners. CMU said the campus itself will serve as a “living laboratory” for testing new ideas and approaches.

“Our relationship with Pittsburgh has shaped CMU for more than a century, and we believe the connections we build in Miami will enrich both cities,” said CMU President Farnam Jahanian.
