Longwood University Hits Construction Milestone on New Music Education Facility

Longwood University in Farmville, Va., recently celebrated the topping out of its new music education and performance facility, according to a news release. The university partnered with development and construction firm Skanska on the 63,800-square-foot facility, which began construction in August 2025 and has an estimated completion date of fall 2028.

“Art has a unique ability to bring people together, spark conversation, and build community, which is why this project and the topping out of Whitehead Hall is such a meaningful milestone,” said Skanska’s Mark Balling, vice president and general manager for the Mid-Atlantic region. “This defining building, as part of our continued partnership with Longwood University, will enhance the university’s music program as well as the greater Farmville community for generations to come.”

Amenities will include music instruction classrooms, student learning facilities, rehearsal and performance spaces, administrative space, and other academic support areas. Its main attraction is a 500-seat concert hall with adjustable acoustics to host recitals and university or other academic events, the news release reports.

"Whitehead Hall will be a tremendous addition to both the Longwood and Farmville communities," said university spokesperson Matthew McWilliams. "This incredible building will be a transformative part of campus, providing space for future musicians, teachers, and patrons of the arts in Virginia. It will also be a place where the broader community can visit and be treated to soaring scores in a beautiful setting. We are grateful to those who have supported the project, and to Skanska for their expertise in constructing such a magnificent place."

The university also partnered with Calloway Johnson Moore & West – Lynchburg and David M. Schwarz Architects for the project’s design. The university previously partnered with Skanska on the Joan Perry Brock Center and the Upchurch University Center, according to the news release.
