Keeping Students Secure, No Matter What

E-Plex Enterprise System

Kaba’s E-Plex Enterprise System worked to keep Linden Public Schools safe after a nearby robbery caused a lockdown at one of their schools.

Linden Public Schools serve over 6,000 students from pre-kindergarten through 12th grade via one high school, two middle schools, and 10 grade schools. Like all schools in New Jersey, Linden Public Schools are required to follow fire and school security drills that are in accordance with the School Security Drill Law enacted by New Jersey’s Senate and General Assembly. According to the 2010 law, schools must conduct one fire drill and one school security drill each month within school hours.

The impetus to install the Kaba E-Plex Enterprise System was fueled by a local bank robbery that put the suspect within the vicinity of the school. This incident caused a lockdown, which is an appropriate response when a dangerous person(s) is thought to be on or near the premises. A lockdown minimizes the risk of exposing the students to danger and demands a law enforcement response.

Maffey’s Security Group installed EPlex 5700 Locks on 13 perimeter doors and 29 interior doors, including classroom and office doors, the library, gym, nursery and storage area. The lock’s LectroBolt technology allowed Maffey’s to easily install the locks on doors with no wires to or through the door. And, with Enterprise Software installed on the system administrator’s computer, the administrator has an effortless way to monitor and control access points from a central location.

Linden Public Schools assigned School No. 10 a full semester to use and test the system and currently there are no bugs to work out. “The Kaba system lets personnel enter areas they need to get into and keeps people out of areas they don’t need to be,” says Jeff Strangio, account executive at Maffey’s Security Group. “It promotes accountability. I am confident that once the other schools see what School No. 10 has implemented, they will go with what works and what has been proven.”
