Josephine Brewington Named Kelly Educational Staffing National Substitute Teacher of the Year

Troy Mich. — Kelly Educational Staffing (KES®), a specialty service of Kelly Services®, is pleased to announce during Teacher Appreciation Month that Josephine Brewington was named as the company’s national Substitute Teacher of the Year for the 2014-2015 school year. Ms. Brewington’s recognition is based on her outstanding performance and exemplary service as a substitute teacher at Beech Grove City Schools in Indiana.

Ms. Brewington, a KES substitute teacher for two years, has taught all grade levels and subjects at Beech Grove City Schools, however, she most frequently can be found in a classroom at South Grove Elementary School. Nominated by more than 100 students and teachers, Ms. Brewington was first selected as the KES Substitute Teacher of the Year for the state of Indiana in late March. As a state winner, she then became eligible for the KES national award, the company’s highest honor, and was named the KES National Substitute Teacher of the Year in April.

“It is obvious from the many nomination letters we received that Josephine Brewington is a dedicated educator whose priority is continued student learning,” said Nicola Soares, vice president for Kelly Educational Staffing. “She encourages students to do their best, is patient and has a “can-do” attitude. We are honored to recognize her as our national substitute teacher of the year.”

Ms. Brewington was presented with the KES National Substitute Teacher of the Year Award on May 18th at an all school assembly at South Grove Elementary School. In attendance was Mayor Dennis Buckley, City of Beech Grove; Sue Ellspermann, Indiana Lieutenant Governor; Dr. Paul Kaiser, superintendent, Beech Grove City Schools; Tom Keeley, assistant superintendent, Beech Grove City Schools; Tonya Reid, principal of South Grove Intermediate School, Julie Gerts, KES regional sales manager, Tiffney McElroy, KES branch manager, family and many friends. As part of her state and national award, Ms. Brewington received a $1,100 bonus award, along with an additional $1,000 to donate to the school from KES. Students presented her with a memorial scrapbook filled with the hand-written nominations and Mayor Buckley proclaimed the day “Josephine Brewington Day”.

“I love working with the students because I always wanted to be a full-time teacher but never had the opportunity. Working as a substitute teacher has given me all the experiences and joys of educating our youth without all the stress,” said Ms. Brewington. “Kelly Services and Beech Grove City Schools really have provided me the best job ever. Going to school is a joy for me, and my days at South Grove are so enjoyable, my work never feels like a job!”

Each year, as part of a long-standing tradition and an integral component in demonstrating how KES values its substitute teachers and paraprofessionals, field managers across the U.S. have the opportunity to nominate individuals for a state-level Substitute Teacher of the Year award. This honor is based on performance, feedback and recommendations from permanent teachers and school administrators at the schools where the substitute teacher or paraprofessional has been assigned. State level winners are then eligible for the national Substitute Teacher of the Year award.
