California School District Completes Elementary School Modernization
The San Diego Unified School District in San Diego, Calif., recently held a ribbon-cutting for a whole-site modernization of Pacific Beach Elementary School, according to local news. The school first opened with one building in 1930 and added six more between 1938 and 1957. Construction for the most recent modernization began in 2023.
The project involved the new construction of a Transitional Kindergarten (TK) & Kindergarten building, a new entryway for the main campus, an expanded grass playfield, and shade shelters, the news release reports. It also entailed renovations to all existing classrooms, the school multi-purpose room, student services facility, restrooms, and school kitchen.
“These new upgrades and the TK and Kinder facility reflect thoughtful planning and design that support effective teaching and learning,” said Dr. Fabi Bagula, district superintendent, in a district press release. “They also reflect our district’s commitment to our youngest learners, giving them the gift of time to build a strong foundation for future school success.”
An expansion of the joint-use outdoor facility will open later this spring, the press release reports. It will include a walking and running track, a new basketball court, drinking fountain, trees, and secure fencing with a publicly accessible gate. The field will be open to the local community as a play area during after-school hours and school breaks.
"As someone who grew up in La Jolla, it is encouraging to see neighborhood schools benefit from meaningful, long-term investments," said San Diego Unified Board of Education Trustee Cody Patterson. "Thanks to community-approved bond funding, these projects reflect what is possible when residents come together to support strong public schools."
