The K-8 charter school currently serves 90 students and is expected to enroll as many as 530 students next year. Athenian Academy initially began with all classes taught in Greek and then shifted to teaching classes in English with half-hour instruction in either Greek or Spanish.

Lee County school board member Melisa Giovannelli spoke at the groundbreaking ceremony, reported the News-Press. “These kids are going to have the opportunity to learn more than one language,” she said. “That’s what Lee County needs. It brings us more global awareness.”
