Athenian Charter School Breaks Ground In Florida

Athenian Academy Charter School, a Greek and Spanish language charter school, broke ground on Nov. 7 in Fort Myers, Florida. The new two-story, 68,000-square-foot building is estimated to cost $15 million. The school, designed and constructed by LAI Group, is expected to be finished by summer 2020.

The K-8 charter school currently serves 90 students and is expected to enroll as many as 530 students next year. Athenian Academy initially began with all classes taught in Greek and then shifted to teaching classes in English with half-hour instruction in either Greek or Spanish.

Lee County school board member Melisa Giovannelli spoke at the groundbreaking ceremony, reported the News-Press. “These kids are going to have the opportunity to learn more than one language,” she said. “That’s what Lee County needs. It brings us more global awareness.”
