StarRez Releases 2025 State of Student Housing Report

Student housing software solutions provider StarRez recently released its second State of the Student Housing Industry Report, according to a news release. The report is based on the results of survey data from more than 400 higher education institutions around the world, both StarRez clients and not. Among the report’s key findings is that one in three institutions have no means of measuring formal student feedback.

“The needs of residential communities are very dynamic,” said StarRez CEO Travis Knipe. “Higher ed housing leaders who leverage this kind of high-quality information can drive strategies and adopt technology to help navigate change, build stronger relationships, and meet the needs of both students and staff, ultimately driving better outcomes for all.”

The report indicates several major themes among student housing needs. About 73% of institutions reported high resident satisfaction, down from almost 80% last year. Students report that their greatest needs are convenience, mental health, inclusion, and the capacity for independence.

One critical pressure point remains staffing, as most schools have between one and ten professional housing staff members. Almost 70% of institutions use automated reporting and analytics to digitize tasks like email communications, room assignments, front desk operations, and billing.

More students are requesting off-campus housing to increase both privacy and independence. About 40% of institutions have also seen a significant growth in demand for international student housing, according to the news release.

Finally, leaders are trying to find new ways to increase revenue as summer earnings drop. Almost two-thirds of institutions reported that less than 10% of their total housing revenue comes from summer, short-term, or conference stays.
