North Chicago School District 187 in North Chicago, Ill., recently held a ribbon-cutting ceremony for the new Forrestal Elementary School, according to a news release. The new school marks a major investment in military-connected students and families at Naval Station Great Lakes.

The new state-of-the-art school, funded through a partnership between District 187, the U.S. Navy and the U.S. Department of Defense, was supported by a federal grant of more than $57 million. District officials said the facility was designed to serve generations of students while reflecting the unique needs of the Great Lakes community.

Located on Naval Station Great Lakes, Forrestal Elementary serves a large population of military families, many of whom face frequent relocations, deployments and the emotional challenges tied to military life.
