Back-to-School Playground Safety: 7 Common Hazards to Look for After Summer Break

As summer break comes to an end, school administrators have plenty to prepare before students return. While classrooms, hallways and common areas often receive attention during all the back-to-school preparations, the playground should not be overlooked. Months of weather exposure, storms, and regular wear can leave behind hazards that may not be immediately noticeable.

Before students head outside for recess, administrators, facilities teams and maintenance staff should conduct a thorough playground inspection. Identifying and addressing potential problems early can help create a safer environment for students and reduce the likelihood of preventable injuries.

Here are seven common playground hazards to look for after summer break.

1. Damaged or Worn Playground Equipment

Playground equipment experiences significant wear over time, and summer weather can contribute to deterioration. Administrators should inspect swings, slides, climbing structures, ladders, platforms, and other equipment for visible signs of damage. Look for cracked, broken, bent or loose components, as well as sharp edges, exposed bolts and missing pieces. Pay close attention to high-use areas and equipment that may have been exposed to extreme heat, heavy rain, or severe storms.

Any equipment with a significant safety concern should be taken out of service until it can be properly repaired or replaced. Documenting maintenance issues can also help schools keep track of recurring problems and plan for future repairs.

2. Worn or Inadequate Safety Surfacing

The surface beneath playground equipment is an important part of the overall safety system. Impact-absorbing surfacing helps cushion falls and reduce injury severity, but it can become worn, displaced, or damaged over time. Falls are a common cause of playground injuries, which makes adequate impact protection especially important beneath climbing structures, slides, and other elevated equipment. When evaluating playground surfacing, administrators should also consider its Head Injury Criterion (HIC) score, which measures how effectively a surface reduces impact forces and the potential for serious head injury. Lower HIC scores indicate greater impact protection. While some surfaces may meet ASTM fall-safety standards, higher-performing impact-absorbing materials like rubber mulch can provide an additional level of protection.

Administrators should also check that surfacing extends throughout the required use and fall zones around playground equipment. If the surface no longer provides adequate coverage or impact protection, repairs or replacement may be necessary. 3. Trip Hazards and Uneven Ground

A playground does not have to contain broken equipment to present a safety concern. Uneven surfaces can create tripping hazards, particularly in areas where children are running, climbing, or moving quickly between activities. So walk the entire playground and surrounding pathways to identify holes, raised edges, exposed roots, broken pavement, and other irregularities. Check transitions between playground surfacing, sidewalks, curbs, and other surfaces as well.

Even relatively small changes in elevation can become problematic when they are located in high-traffic areas. Addressing these hazards before school begins can help reduce unnecessary risks during recess and outdoor activities.

4. Loose Hardware and Structural Connections

Small components can have a major impact on playground safety. During a back-to-school inspection, check bolts, screws, nuts, chains, fasteners, and other connection points for signs of loosening, rust or damage. Swing chains and attachment points deserve particular attention because they are exposed to repeated movement and stress. Protective caps and covers should also be checked to make sure they remain securely in place.

Maintenance teams should address loose or missing hardware promptly and follow the playground manufacturer's recommendations for repairs and replacement parts. These components should also be included in regular inspections throughout the school year.

5. Drainage Problems and Standing Water

Summer thunderstorms can reveal drainage issues that may have developed or worsened during the months when school was out. Standing water around playground equipment can create slippery conditions and contribute to deterioration of certain surfacing materials. Look for puddles, muddy areas, erosion, and areas where water consistently collects after rain. Drains and drainage pathways should be checked for leaves, dirt, and other debris that could prevent water from moving away from the playground.

If drainage problems persist, administrators may need to consult with a qualified professional to determine whether grading, drainage improvements or surfacing repairs are necessary.

6. Debris, Overgrown Vegetation and Environmental Hazards

A playground may accumulate hazards even when equipment itself remains in good condition. Before students return, inspect the play area for sticks, rocks, broken glass, litter, and other debris. Administrators should also check surrounding vegetation. Overgrown bushes, low-hanging branches and exposed roots can interfere with play areas or create additional hazards. Look for thorny plants, insect nests and other environmental concerns as well.

Severe summer weather can also leave behind fallen branches or other debris. A thorough cleanup and inspection can help ensure students return to a playground that is clean and ready for use.

7. Damaged Fencing and Gates

Playground boundaries are another important part of the inspection process. Fences and gates should help keep children within designated play areas and separate them from parking lots, driveways and other potentially hazardous locations. Walk the perimeter and look for damaged fencing, gaps, rust, sharp or protruding components and other signs of deterioration. Gates should open and close properly, latch securely and remain free of conditions that could create pinch or entrapment hazards.

Schools should also make sure pathways through and around the playground remain accessible and unobstructed.

Don't Stop at the Pre-School-Year Inspection

A back-to-school inspection is an important starting point, but playground safety requires ongoing attention. Weather, daily use and normal wear can create new hazards throughout the school year. School administrators should establish a routine inspection and maintenance process that allows staff to identify problems, document concerns and report issues promptly. Teachers, recess monitors, and other staff members should also know how to recognize common playground hazards and understand the school's procedures for reporting them.

When significant repairs, equipment replacements or safety-surfacing improvements are needed, schools should consider working with qualified playground safety and surfacing professionals.
