Washington State University Debuts New Engineering Hall

Washington State University recently celebrated a dedication ceremony for the new Schweitzer Engineering Hall on its Pullman campus in Pullman, Wash., according to university news. The facility measures 66,288 square feet, and its completion marks the first milestone in a larger university effort to modernize the engineering and design district.

The project cost a total of $80 million, and funding came from a combination of the university, the State of Washington, Schweitzer Engineering Laboratories, Ed and Beatriz Schweitzer, and about 100 individuals, corporations, and foundations, the news release reports.

The new facility serves as a central hub for WSU’s Voiland College of Engineering and Architecture, bringing academic and student-support resources together under one roof. Amenities include multipurpose classrooms, event spaces, student club and showcase areas, collaborative spaces, a shared maker space, and services for advising, tutoring, and career placement. The building also features a welcome center, coffee shop, and dedicated study and teaming areas.

Design features allow the building itself to serve as an educational tool. Portions of its mechanical infrastructure—including heating, ventilation, and stormwater systems—are exposed and labeled, while large steel trusses remain visible in the Dimond Auditorium to give students firsthand views of building systems and structural elements.

“Schweitzer Engineering Hall represents the very best of what can happen when public investment, private philanthropy, and a shared belief in student success come together,” said WSU President Betsy Cantwell. “This building will serve generations of Cougars by providing inspiring spaces where students can discover, create, collaborate, and prepare to solve some of society’s most pressing challenges.”

The building’s name recognizes WSU’s longstanding relationship with Schweitzer Engineering Laboratories and company founder Ed Schweitzer, a WSU alumnus and former faculty member. Ed and Beatriz Schweitzer and SEL each contributed $10 million toward the project.
