Western Kentucky University Breaks Ground on First Phase of $350M Student Housing Project
Western Kentucky University (WKU) in Bowling Green, Ky., recently broke ground on the first phase of a $350-million student housing initiative, according to a news release. The university is partnering with Gilbane Development through a public-private partnership (P3) to replace aging residence halls and modernize on-campus living accommodations.
The initiative, called Elevate WKU, will begin with construction of The Southern Gateway, a residential community featuring approximately 1,000 beds and new dining facilities. The project will occupy the former site of Hugh Poland and Douglas Keen Halls, two of the university’s oldest residence halls, and is scheduled to open in fall 2028.
The new facility will feature private and semi-private suites, offering students a variety of housing configurations. Each residential floor will include shared lounges and gathering areas, while the ground floor will provide additional space for studying, socializing, and collaborative activities.
Other amenities will include community kitchens, a 24-hour study area, dining options, and a multipurpose classroom. The classroom will help accommodate the expansion of WKU’s Living Learning Communities, which integrate students’ residential and academic experiences.
“Today is an important milestone for WKU and for generations of Hilltoppers who will call this campus home,” said WKU President Timothy C. Caboni. “Elevate WKU is about more than replacing aging buildings. It is about creating residential environments that strengthen the WKU Experience, support student success and reflect what students and families expect from modern university housing.”
According to the news release, Elevate WKU represents the largest investment in residential facilities in the university’s history. The broader initiative will extend beyond The Southern Gateway to address additional residence hall improvements and explore new approaches to integrating campus housing with academic programming.
The university and Gilbane Development intend for the multi-year partnership to improve residential infrastructure while creating spaces that encourage student engagement and academic achievement. Future phases will continue the modernization of WKU’s housing inventory, with an emphasis on meeting changing student needs and supporting the university’s long-term educational objectives.
