California District Opens New Continuation High School

The Fort Bragg Unified School District (FBUSD) in Fort Bragg, Calif., recently held a ribbon-cutting ceremony for Noyo High School, a continuation high school that provides alternative education options for students in grades 6–12, according to a news release. The district partnered with Quattrochi Kwok Architects for design and FRC Inc. for construction, and the project’s funding came from Local Bond Measure B.

The campus consists of three one-story buildings designed to support individual growth and hands-on learning. Academic amenities include classrooms, a Maker Space, outdoor athletic facilities, and open collaboration areas. It also includes an administrative and student services hub featuring conference spaces, a kitchenette, shower, and laundry facilities for students who may not have those resources at home., the news release reports.

"The opening of this campus is a direct reflection of our community's deep commitment to our students," said Joseph Aldridge, FBUSD superintendent. "This investment ensures that every student, regardless of their learning style or educational path, has access to a high-quality, modern environment built to support their individual journey to graduation and beyond."

The Maker Space features equipment and technology for skill development in fabrication, music, art, and filmmaking, according to the news release. According to the news release, “By pairing student-centered architecture with personalized learning, the new facility better serves students who need an alternative to traditional learning settings, improving graduation rates while empowering every learner to build confidence, pursue their passions, and achieve lifelong success.”

"Designing spaces that support alternative learning pathways is immensely rewarding," said QKA Principal Kevin Chapin. "Our goal for Noyo High School was to create an inviting, adaptable campus built entirely around student-centered learning and growth, providing every young person with the tools they need to succeed."

The next generation of school design is making the case that the first day of kindergarten and the last day of high school can and should feel connected through common support systems and infrastructure in the physical environment.
