Phoenix High School Completes First Phase of Campus Renovations
Metro Tech High School, part of the Phoenix Union High School District (PXU) in Phoenix, Ariz., recently announced the completion of the first stage of a campus renovation project, according to a news release. The school reopened a series of public-facing business operations spaces including credit union, daycare, floral, cosmetology, and culinary services. It also includes new CTE learning spaces for the school’s nursing assistant, pharmacy, and sports medicine programs.
Phase I of the renovation project began in spring 2025 and included modernizing about 77,000 square feet of CTE and traditional classroom space, a new school entrance and lobby, administrative spaces, and room for future expansion, according to the news release. Phase II is currently in progress and is dedicated toward the new construction of a 22,500-square-foot gymnasium and new athletic fields. The district is partnering with DLR Group for the project’s design and McCarthy Building Companies, Inc., for construction.
"Watching Metro Tech’s campus transform has been incredibly rewarding for our construction team, as well as for the school’s faculty and staff,” said Andy Fillion, McCarthy project director. “Working on an active school campus brings challenges and requires rigorous safety protocols to protect students, faculty and staff. But seeing their reactions and hearing their excitement as the campus takes shape has made the work especially meaningful for all of us. And, having students from the school’s construction trade programs take part is an added bonus. The pride they bring to the project is exactly what we hope to see in the next generation of construction professionals.”
Other renovation work included in the project includes additional parking and bus stalls; a new white box theater space; new baseball, softball, and soccer fields; new cooling towers for the central utility plant; and a “complete upgrade” to the underground mechanical piping system.
“We are extremely excited for the future of Metro Tech High School,” said Thea Andrade, district superintendent. “With the overwhelming public support we received in passing our Bond, we can’t wait to offer the next generation of Phoenix Union’s students the best educational experience possible.”
